The Staff Accountant is responsible for the maintenance and analysis of assigned general ledger accounts, with an area of focus in our Coverage Programs team.  The incumbent is accountable for the reconciliation of the accounts and related schedules along with the timely preparation of monthly journal entries.  Track the activity in general ledger accounts and maintain supporting detail that accounts for the balances reflected in the month end closing Trial Balance report.  Document and maintain general ledger accounting policies, procedures and workflows. The Staff Accountant will play a key role in the month end closing process and will also be responsible for identifying process improvement opportunities to gain operational efficiencies. 


  • Assist in the development and execution of accounting processes and procedures for our coverage programs.
  • Prepare monthly billing of coverage program expenses to external parties.
  • Establish regular procedures and perform scheduled analysis of general ledger Balance Sheet accounts.
  • Maintain subsidiary detailed listings of contents of all Balance Sheet accounts.
  • Identify month end variances, research and reconcile differences.
  • Prepare adjusting journal entries with supporting detail and submit to Finance management for review and approval.
  • Provide support to other key areas of the Finance department, i.e., capitation, payroll, accounts payable and claims disbursement. 
  • Assist other department team members with questions raised through the monthly budget variance analysis process (BVA). 
  • Maintain existing accounting policies, procedures and workflows.  Write new G/L accounting policies and procedures as needed.
  • Assist other department team members with questions raised through the monthly budget variance analysis process (BVA). 
  • Respond to special requests for financial data and analysis and for information on current and proposed projects and programs; interpret results and format to facilitate decision-making.
  • Participate in the annual audit by assisting Finance management with the gathering of supporting documentation requested by the independent auditors. This work may include the testing of internal controls and documenting any weaknesses found.
  • Perform research assignments, surveys and studies as they pertain to the SFHP budget or finances or in support of projects for our coverage programs.


  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field is preferred
  • 2-5 years of successful accounting and financial reporting work experience
  • Extensive knowledge finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control principles, including General Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems
  • Knowledge of federal, state and city financial regulations
  • Ability to analyze financial data
  • Strong customer service skills that include the ability to respond to internal and external requests in a timely manner
  • Quality control by demonstrating accuracy and thoroughness, monitors own work to ensure quality and applies feedback to improve performance
  • Willingness to adapt to a rapidly changing work environment
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Advanced analytical skills and problem solving skills with the ability to formulate and communicate recommendations for improvement
  • Knowledge and application of English grammar including composition, editing and proofreading skills
  • Experience with document imaging software, Great Plains, and ADP payroll software preferred. 
  • Experience with a health care organization and/or a health plan and medical claims disbursement is preferred
  • Understanding the concept of Provider capitation as well as experience with capitation disbursement is a plus.
  • Experience in promoting cross-functional teamwork and encouraging innovative thinking and ideas
